This project combines thrifting, junking and dollar store items - ALL the things I love! What could be better than something truly unique and handmade for the holidays?!
A few old things from my stash including:
- thick file folders
- old striped pillowcase
- old book pages
- cotton and felt fabric cut into strips
- silver cupcake liners
- small silver bells
- rick rack trim
- red streamer pieces
Dollar Tree had several cute ornaments that I knew I was going to use. The JOY glitter ornaments were ones that just screamed make a banner out of me! Add to that glitter foam snowflakes and some clear plastic bauble hanging ornaments and my head started swirling with endless possibilities! The only other new things I bought were some silver and red tinsel ribbon and scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby, but if you want to save yourself from another shopping trip you can always get these things at the dollar store as well.
Here's the list of things I picked up from my shopping trips:
- JOY glitter ornaments (Dollar Tree)
- glitter foam snowflakes (Dollar Tree)
- clear plastic bauble hanging ornaments (Dollar Tree)
- silver tinsel (Hobby Lobby)
- red tinsel (Hobby Lobby)
- scrapbook paper (Hobby Lobby)
I made my own pattern for the pennant and began cutting out the shapes from the file folders. Then I added the layers step by step. On top of the book page rosette I cut and glued the inside of the doily so that when I placed the letters over the snowflake they would stand out and be legible.
Excuse the poor photos, but hopefully you can get a sense of process.
I punched holes in each of the pennants and strung them with twine.
Then I added the Christmas ornaments from the dollar store along with assorted strips of fabric in between the letters and at the ends.
I think it has a vintage circus feel. What do you think?
Here is the completed banner...
Hope I have inspired you to make one yourself!
