Something Old, Something New Christmas Banner

Something Old, Something New Christmas Banner
This is the banner that I have been working on in my brain and in my studio for a few weeks now. I finally finished one and am thrilled with the results! Hope to make a few other ones in different styles soon too.

This project combines thrifting, junking and dollar store items - ALL the things I love! What could be better than something truly unique and handmade for the holidays?!

Materials Used:

Something Old

A few old things from my stash including:

  • thick file folders
  • old striped pillowcase
  • old book pages
  • cotton and felt fabric cut into strips
  • twine
  • silver cupcake liners
  • doilies
  • small silver bells
  • rick rack trim
  • red streamer pieces

Something New

Dollar Tree had several cute ornaments that I knew I was going to use. The JOY glitter ornaments were ones that just screamed make a banner out of me! Add to that glitter foam snowflakes and some clear plastic bauble hanging ornaments and my head started swirling with endless possibilities! The only other new things I bought were some silver and red tinsel ribbon and scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby, but if you want to save yourself from another shopping trip you can always get these things at the dollar store as well.

Here's the list of things I picked up from my shopping trips:

  • JOY glitter ornaments (Dollar Tree)
  • glitter foam snowflakes (Dollar Tree)
  • clear plastic bauble hanging ornaments (Dollar Tree)
  • silver tinsel (Hobby Lobby)
  • red tinsel (Hobby Lobby)
  • scrapbook paper (Hobby Lobby)

I made my own pattern for the pennant and began cutting out the shapes from the file folders. Then I added the layers step by step. On top of the book page rosette I cut and glued the inside of the doily so that when I placed the letters over the snowflake they would stand out and be legible.

Excuse the poor photos, but hopefully you can get a sense of process.

I punched holes in each of the pennants and strung them with twine.

Then I added the Christmas ornaments from the dollar store along with assorted strips of fabric in between the letters and at the ends.

I think it has a vintage circus feel. What do you think?

Here is the completed banner...

Hope I have inspired you to make one yourself!

  6. Thanks for partying! Pinned this qt. Love the vintage flair!!!! Merry Christmas to you :)

  7. This would go great with the DIY JOY window I made for the stockings! I'll have to keep this in mind for next year.

  8. Love your Joy banner. It is very unique and quite pretty, great ideas to combine what you had. When you picked out your choices did you know what you'd do with them all? Your banner has inspired me to make something else with some stickers, etc. I've had.
What would we do without the $tree? I got so many awesome ornaments, decorations from there I was having a great time figuring out what to do with it all. As it happens I changed my mind from what I had originally planned for some of it, that's usually the way with me.
I can be sitting on couch and all of a sudden an idea hits and I have to go do it right away, (otherwise I'll forgot what I was going to do, it's called senior moments for me.) As it happens what I make or how I use something usually ends up better than original idea when I get other things with them. Love it.
Wishing you and yours a wonderful and healthy Christmas.
