Black Ladder Back Chairs

Black Ladder Back Chairs
It's time for Themed Furniture Makeover Day again. This months theme is "Black". I have grown to appreciate furniture in black over the years. I decided to tackle some chairs that a friend of mine had given me and had been sitting in the garage waiting for a makeover...

I had been on the fence about painting them and wasn't sure what colour to choose if I did.

I decided to give it a go with paint that I already had in my stash… my favourite black "Cast Iron Skillet" by Blackberry House Paint.

And I decided to give it a go with my newest toy… my sprayer from HomeRight.  I have been wanting to give one of these sprayers a try for a long time. Thank you HomeRight!

They were in rough shape and I don't think any amount of oil would have given the wood or caning enough protection. I began by wiping them down with hydrogen peroxide and water to kill any mold that might have been on them and then with vinegar and water and a damp cloth. I sanded off the varnish as much as I could.

I added some water to thin out the paint a little as the instructions for the sprayer recommended and almost had enough paint to finish both of them, but then had to go out and buy some more. I figured since I was using the same paint and colour that all I needed to do was put the sprayer in a large plastic bag until I got back...

… but when I got back and added more paint, I could not get the sprayer to work.  I thought I had broken the piece as it was only my second time using it and there were various warning about that sort of thing happening as a result of not cleaning right away… but after taking it apart for cleaning I saw that the nozzle was closed shut from the paint drying onto it… What a
relief that I hadn't ruined it after all, and I assure you it won't happen again! ;o)

I know how durable "Blackberry House" paint is and will have to do some research as far as what protective coating to use. I would use wax, but if these chairs are used on a porch with the sun beating down on them, wax may not be the best coating. Any suggestions?

Make sure to check out all of the other "BLACK" themed furniture pieces that my friends have linked below…

  7. I have those exact chairs painted black. They are so versaitale, I think we have used them in every room in our house through the years! Yours turned out great! :)

  8. These look terrific in their new coat of black, Lucy! I need to break down and try a sprayer for a change, seems so much easier! XO

  9. Love the makeover! I just recently used my sprayer for the first time and love it! Bet it was so easy to use on chairs!

  10. Your chairs look great in black. That sprayer definitely makes quick work of painting a chair.

  11. Black is so classic and nuetral. I have a dining set and I'm thinking about doing it in black now because your chairs are gorgeous!!

Have you ever tried Minwax Poly Rub On finish? I want to say there's a water based version, but not sure. Anyway, I've used it before, and loved the out come. It's great for pieces like this because it doesn't gum up right away, so you can get it into the grooves and all. I'm no furniture export (not even close) but this product did come to mind.

    Love your chairs!!!
